Art Martinez

The year was 1969, and Nixon was in office, and I can hear my parents bickering in the background about my bother’s clothes, weekend came, and we were all dressed up for my bother’s holy communion. My father turned to me and handed me a Polaroid camera, I was dismayed looking at it. When I finally figure out where the button was, I took my first picture! I was filled with excitement as the picture began to appear in black and white. From then on I was hooked into photography.

Several Years later in 1977 I bought my first brand NEW 35mm Olympus camera, after using outdated cameras from my parents. I was going to town taking pictures of everything I saw. I getting prints from the lab every week. Began shooting pictures of my friends until the 90’s, that’s when I advertised as portrait photographer and experimented using many cameras, until 2005 I decided to give up portrait shooting and began my quest of photographing my hearts desire. I try to be creative in lighting, perspective and composition in what I see.

I still shoot film along with a digital camera, both are Hasselblad, and I develop my own film and use a Nikon F3 to photograph the negatives and call it filmgital. I have some prints made this way, seems to capture more detail, at least for me it does.

Many of the prints on this site were taken with many different cameras including an iPhone, and what I have learned, it doesn’t really matter what camera you use to photograph, it’s all about the capture of life that really counts. As I produce these prints, I am amazed how the highlights are enhance due to the paper. You will be amazed too.

I’m a vintage photographer who still believes in having prints done. Back when I was doing photography before digital, I was providing pictures on paper that could be hung on walls. Now days everything is viewed on phones. It’s not a bad thing, however it’s a limited time of viewing and forgotten. With an actual print it can be view at any time wherever you hang it. I’m creating a print that has that same feeling you get when you view it from your phone. The phone has a light that illuminate’s images and make them brighter. This paper I use does exactly that and brings out the highlights and shadows remain remarkably well. Until you see it for yourself that’s when you will completely be understanding the mood I am creating.
